Biography

Wijnand A.M. Jongen MBA (48 years of age) has been the managing director of Thuiswinkel.org, the branch organisation for businesses involved in the distance sale of products and/or services to consumers via the internet, catalogues, post, etc., since 20th December 2000. There are currently about 800 leading businesses affiliated with the branch association. In 2007 the Dutch home-shopping branch had a turnover of about €4.5 billion, of which €3.9 billion was generated online.

The press portrays Mr. Jongen as one of the leading internet-entrepreneurs in our country (this is how he was described in the top 40 of the magazine ‘Internet in Business’ in 1998 and 1999). The fundament for internet-entrepreneurship was laid down in the middle of the nineteen-nineties. Mr. Jongen, as an international sales manager with the OVD Group – a knowledge and research institute for the retail and wholesale trade – laid down the foundations for various forms of research and development in the field of e-commerce and e-business.

During the middle of the nineteen-nineties, Mr. Jongen was a co-founder of Macropolis, the first Dutch organization that compared shops, products and prices on the internet for consumers. In June 2000, Macropolis was taken over by Newconomy. Mr. Jongen was the CEO of Macropolis between 1997 and 2000.

In 1998 Mr. Jongen was a co-founder of Retail One, a knowledge and business centre for e-business, in which he had an executive position between 1998 and 2001. During the same period Mr. Jongen was an executive of Innoquest, facilitators of change-management and active in the field of innovative business events.

Mr. Jongen studied at the University of Amsterdam, the Randolph-Macon College and the Averett University in the United States of America. He gained his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at the Averett University (1993) and an MA in pedagogy at the University of Amsterdam (1986). He was employed in various sales, consultant and managerial capacities in the United States of America and in the Netherlands.

Since 2002 Mr. Jongen has participated in the Strategy Committee of EMOTA, the European umbrella organization for 23 national branch associations for businesses involved in distance selling.

Mr. Jongen has various executive roles. He is a member of the board of governors of the Dutch Advertising Code Committee, the Info-filter Foundation, the Certification Foundation (Thuiswinkel Waarborg), the National Thuiswinkel Awards Foundation and the e-Marketing & Distance Selling chair. Since 2004 Mr. Jongen has participated in the Dutch Bank’s National Forum on the Payment System. In addition he has a seat on various consultative bodies and committees.

Mr. Jongen is in great demand as a speaker and an ad-hoc chairman (also in the English language: Mr. Jongen spent more than 5 years studying and working the United States of America). For the last 10 years he has been a guest-speaker at the Topcolleges Retail Marketing of the Management Study Center. Since 2008 he has been a guest lecturer for the new post-HBO [Higher Vocational Education] Marketing course.

On 27th April 2006 Wijnand Jongen was elected, from 4 nominees, as DM (Direct Marketing) Man of the Year 2006.

Wijnand Jongen lives in Wijk bij Duurstede and has four children.
