Biography

Richard E. Last began his career with JCPenney Catalog in 1974 where he held a variety of positions in merchandise planning, inventory management, operations, strategic planning, and business development.

In 1990, Mr. Last became the Manager of New Business Development for JCPenney Catalog. In that role, he was responsible for managing the international expansion of JCPenney Catalog and for Electronic Retailing. Mr. Last led the launch of a series of Catalogs in the UK, Japan, Mexico, and Chile. Also during the early 90’s, Mr. Last led the development of JCPenney on-line “stores” on Prodigy, Compuserv, and AOL… as well as a variety of shopping trials involving interactive television and CD-ROM.

In the mid 90’s focus shifted to the World Wide Web. Under Mr. Last’s leadership, JCPenney began selling merchandise via the Web in October 1994 when he founded the jcp.com shopping site. In February 1999, JCP Internet Commerce Solutions, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of JCPenney, was formed and Mr. Last was appointed Executive Vice President responsible for Merchandising and Specialty Businesses on jcp.com. In February 2001 Mr. Last was named Vice President, JCP ECommerce L.P. and grew jcp.com to a highly profitable $1.3 billion business. In May 2005, Mr. Last was named President of JCP Ecommerce L.P.

In September 2006, Mr. Last was named Vice President and Director of New Business Development to explore new avenue of growth powered by the infrastructure of jcp.com. To further these initiatives, JCP Private Brand Retail Holdings, Inc. was formed in 2007 and Mr. Last was named President.

Mr. Last has represented JCPenney on a variety of industry groups including the Information Organized (I:O) Consortia, and the E-Markets Special Interest Group, of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as the Center for E-business at the Sloan school of MIT. He has represented JCPenney on National Retail Federation councils.

Currently Mr. Last serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shop.org, the digital retail arm of the National Retail Federation. In this capacity, He is also Chairman of the Research Committee of Shop.org. His committee is responsible for “The State of Retailing Online”, now in its tenth edition, and considered the leading industry benchmarking study.

Mr. Last has been a frequent speaker both in the US and overseas, on the topics of International direct business and electronic retailing. He has been quoted often in industry periodicals, books, and reports. Mr. Last holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College and Master’s Degree from Long Island University. He resides in Plano, Texas with his wife, Linda, and their family
